Classroom Presentation System Design: Scaling From Basic to Complex
Unified classroom design is an essential part of any campus AV system plan. However, keeping to a common thread woven into both single display rooms and complex collaboration rooms can be difficult. There is also a struggle to give enough functionality without making systems too complex for beginner and basic users. I would like to share a theory that may lay the ground work for current and future classroom systems that will address both of these issues.

Don't Call It an ID-10-t Error
When discussing IT customer service improvement, focus is often on quantitative metrics like turn time and ticket management. We usually ignore that qualitative factor which will most improve customer satisfaction; rapport with our customers. The soft skills that put others at ease and give them a more positive interaction have traditionally been considered unteachable. The image of hopelessly awkward technorati has become ingrained in our culture and many lean into it, but this is a false paradigm. Soft skills, such as politeness and active listening, not only greatly improve customer interactions, but are also easily learned and mastered with just a bit of practice. Whether you work at a help line or in departmental support, these skills can improve customer experience time and again. In this session we will cover the five teachable soft skill concepts and ways you can immediately implement them in your own department.

Bentley University Fixes Slow App Performance Using Wire Data Analytics
Nearly every service and application at Bentley University ties back into a central administrative system based on Banner software, which stores student, alumni, financial, and personnel data in an Oracle database. If one application uses that database inefficiently, such as with poorly written queries, it can impact the performance of other applications that also rely on the database. Understanding how applications interacted with the Banner system was a major challenge for Bentley.

Bentley University's 50-person IT organization manages a patchwork of departmental applications, as well as web-based services such as email; the MyBentley portal for students, faculty, and applicants; and a Blackboard online learning management system. When a task that should take seconds takes minutes, workflow gets disrupted—and many tasks are repeated, causing costly delays that add up to increased costs.

Join us to learn how Bentley University’s IT team addressed these challenges by utilizing wire data to quickly gain visibility into the Banner application without invasive agents ensuring better application performance, improving revenues and reducing costs.

Next Generation Risk Management
Cyber Security is now commonly a board issue and is presenting many new challenges to the leaders responsible for managing business risk. During our Cyber Security road shows, the business leaders two most common concerns are: "I don’t know what I don’t know,” and “I don’t know where to start.” Presidio’s Next Generation Risk Management program integrates continuous testing (yearly, quarterly and monthly), remediation, scorecard, governance (NIST CSF/ISO27001), strategy, roadmap development, threat intelligence and incident response into a comprehensive risk management program. This session will help you understand an approach to figuring out "what you don’t know" and “where you should start.”

Captioning: Why do I need to do it, and how do I get started?
We all know that creating accessible online content is a good thing to do, but do you also know that it's required by law? Creating an inclusive environment for all members of our community - allowing everyone to take part in all aspects of our online environments - is our responsibility. Captioning is one step in that direction. This session will give a high level overview of why this needs to be done, why auto-captioning products such as YouTube just don't cut it, and what solutions are ready for you to use. The importance of the IT professional in this effort will also be discussed, combined with ideas for bringing others along on the journey.

The mission of the Project Management Office (PMO) is to support ITS by facilitating project selection and tracking through IT Project Governance, and by providing our project managers with the resources they need to deliver expected results on time and within budget.3 pictures will show how we do this. One picture shows the sequence of events for any project lifecycle; we can discuss the risks of doing any of this out of sequence. One picture shows our Project Governance; we can discuss why it works and who plays a role during each stage. And the last picture is a mind map of everything to PMO does; this was used to show our value. The PMO does not only show up once a month and ask for status and then disappear for a month.

Attackers Know Encryption....Do You?
In a post-Snowden world companies are starting to really ramp up their encryption efforts, meanwhile attackers have been doing this for years as a way to infiltrate organizations and ex-filtrate data. How do you gain visibility into these encrypted streams of bits and bytes? Visibility is important. When services and applications get multiplexed into a data center, the single point of control that decrypts the ciphertext—the application delivery controller (ADC)—becomes the logical place for policy-based traffic steering. This is also the first place than any kind of content-based control can happen.

In 2009, Shenandoah University implemented a mobile learning initiative (iMLearning) that provided a MacBook Pro computer and a mobile device to students. Leveraging Threat Intelligence to enhance Cyber Security Programs in Education
A new approach to operational security models is needed. Too much sensitive data is being lost or held for ransom and schools are being plagued by disruptions in service caused by amplified internet attacks. The most common security controls deployed by schools are often still letting malware onto users’ machines, or are not outfitted to detect and protect themselves from attacks that can take institutions offline and disrupt vital external communication. This session will focus on how the introduction and utilization of threat intelligence feeds and services can sharpen an organization's security focus. We will learn how these sophisticated attacks bypass traditional defenses and how leveraging the ever growing data set of threat intelligence can help augment existing information security operations.

Prioritizing the IT Project Portfolio - An Exercise in Governance
IT projects come at us from every angle, every direction, and every level – and everyone always seems to need it right now!  How do you sort through the list of projects and requests and determine which ones can and should be done and when?  With the help of IT Governance, a common intake form, and the dedication of our Project Management Office, George Mason University is attempting to do just that.

Come along as we demonstrate the processes, tools, and templates we have built over the past two years to take a list of projects and turn it into our Project Portfolio.  Not only will we share our tools, but you will get the opportunity to walk through our process during our live prioritization activity that puts you in the shoes of our Governance Group.

Join us and get answers to questions such as:  Who’s going to benefit? What’s a mandate?  If we don’t do this, will our systems come crashing down?  Is this a "nice to have"? Do we have funding? And more…

The Frictionless Data Center
Speed, accuracy and virtualization are dominating the demands in higher education data centers. To address these motivators as well as maintain a stable platform for our customers, new approaches to provisioning, support and design are needed. This is a deep dive look into the cabling, configuration and concerns of migrating to a frictionless data center design while at the same time continuing with the high quality service required by the customer base. Topics are to cover combining two metropolitan data centers into a seamless vlan transportation fabric; unifying security with demarcation points; touchless patch-cabling and provisioning. The talk will use Cisco’s Nexus solution as the basis for the examples however, the concepts and process can be applied to any network vendor’s solution.

Planting the Seed: Apple TV's in the Classroom
The University of Richmond School of Law has installed Apple TV’s in the classrooms. The initiative is a spin-off from our iPad program, where iPads are issued to all students who are enrolled in one of the Law Clinics. Students must make presentations to their groups, so an Apple TV was installed in a small classroom/conference room for their use. Since then, we have installed Apple TV’s in all of the law school classrooms, and the University has also installed them in other spaces across campus as well. We will share what we have learned, how instructors are using the devices, the advantages of being untethered and unorthodox with teaching technology, and how we’ve been able to get our PC laptops connected as well. We will share the highs and the lows of the project to help you avoid some of the hurdles we have encountered.

Big Data and The Internet of Things
What is the relationship between Big Data and the Internet of Things (IOT)? Both deal with massive amounts of data, though the IOT includes devices and connectivity. Is this a chicken or egg conundrum, or two sides of the same coin? Bear in mind these statistics. Every minute we send 204 million emails, generate 1.8 million Facebook likes, send 278 thousand tweets, and upload 200 thousand photos to Facebook, and that doesn’t even count, for example, the data the stock market or police body cameras generate. At the same time the number of devices that we connect to the Internet will rise from about 13 billion today to 50 billion by 2020. In fact, the Internet of Things is on its way to becoming the next technological revolution. How we conceptualize and manage the relationship between Big Data and the IOT will continue to challenge us in the next decade. It’s time we give this serious thought and discussion.

Internet of Things, Considerations for Higher Education
A report by the McKinsey Global Institute, "Unlocking the Potential of the Internet of Things", defines IoT as “Sensors and actuators connected by networks to computing systems. These systems can monitor or manage the health and actions of connected objects and machines. Connected sensors can also monitor the natural world, people and animals.”

Considerations for Higher Education:
- Next Generation Student Experience
- Connected Campus
- Physical Campus Security
- Operational Efficiency
- Operational Improvement through predictive analytics
- Connected Stadium, Public Venues and Athletics
- Data Security

In Q4-2015, CDWG formed a Dedicated Team of Solution Architects to the Internet of Things. This team is supporting our Manufacturing, Education, Government and Public Safety verticals dedicated to delivering Smart and Connected Solutions. We anticipate the proposed content of this presentation to change over the next 4 Months before ACCS. We will adjust our content as IoT develops.

CDWG's Definition: Smart Devices Connected to the Internet, communicating with other things and people and transmitting data to be securely managed, stored and analyzed for actionable insights and value.

Everything produces data, but it is unlikely being analyzed in a meaningful way.

TLS Excellence
In a post-Snowden world companies are starting to recognize the real need for SSL Everywhere and are actively amping up their encryption efforts; meanwhile, attackers have been doing this for years as a way to infiltrate organizations and ex-filtrate data. How do you gain visibility into these encrypted streams of bits and bytes? Visibility is important but control is king. When services and applications get multiplexed into a data center, the single point of control that decrypts the ciphertext—the application delivery controller (ADC)—becomes the logical place for policy-based traffic steering. This is also the first place than any kind of content-based control can happen. Learn how to get that elusive A+ on SSL Labs and how F5 is naturally leading the way with cipher diversity and best practice.

Proximity Beacon Training and Learning: Applying New Technology in a Practical Context to Promote Learning Retention
Proximity beacons represent a new and exciting emerging technology simultaneously filled with unlimited potential and daunting challenges. Proximity beacons (ibeacons based on the Apple protocol) are small devices (that can be located virtually anywhere) that broadcast unique identifiers using low energy Bluetooth sensing technology. These identifiers trigger a variety of actions, including connecting to websites, videos, PowerPoint presentations, and almost any conceivable content available online. Beacons can also locate the position of a mobile device in physical space. Beacon technology has the potential to enhance organizational learning by making more permanent desired measurable employee outcomes that extend and reinforce more traditional forms of learning by moving learning into day-to-day practical and applied contexts. One of the challenges with training is creating relatively permanent change in employee behavior based on training content (often referred to as transfer of training). Leveraging beacon technology in work environments allows training content to be reinforced and applied over time, helping to sustain fundamental changes in what employees do. This presentation documents a process of innovation directed at providing micro training in daily work contexts to facilitate new employee on boarding in a large Mid-Atlantic municipal government. This work was conducted within the context of a graduate level seminar in training and development where the agenda was to use technology to augment a more traditional face-to-face training program. The presentation includes both a discussion of the innovation process and a demonstration of how the technology can be leveraged to meet the needs of one organization and how this technology might be applied in other contexts. It will also provide a hands on opportunity for participants to learn how to utilize this technology and to create their own content.

Developing a Successful Student-staffed Help Desk
Many colleges and universities have help desk positions staffed by students. It can be challenging, on several fronts. How do you hire, and retain, the right people? What kind of training is best? Can you prevent the ‘use it or lose it’ phenomenon? How do you evaluate their successes and grow from opportunities for improvement? This presentation will answer these questions in telling the story of Longwood University’s instructional technology “help desk”. Separate and distinct from the University’s information technology Help Desk, the Instructional Technology Collaborators are the student staff members within the Digital Education Collaborative. The ITCs are active participants in providing the support and structure behind the University’s commitment to teaching and learning excellence through the effective application of instructional technology. Members in the campus community routinely praise the ITCs for their professionalism and effectiveness. We’ll share the strategies we employ to earn this praise and answer the questions above.

The Communication Effectiveness of Video Enabled Office Telephones: Quantitative Research Results
This study explores the possibilities enabled by unified communication, especially the use of interactive audio and video and the affordances of video-enabled office environments. One of the factors of unified communications that enables immediacy and nonverbal communication is the use of high-definition video. The foundation of office communication has been the audio-centric telephone, however, how does business communication change once video is added to office phones? This presentation describes a quantitative research project that collected data from over 50 research participants. Data was collected before video enabled VoIP office telephones were installed, after the new phones were installed, and again six-weeks later. This data was analyzed to study the practical impact of the new technology. How would the inclusion of easy to use, two-way video effect inter-office communication? Would the immediacy and nonverbal cues of participants enhance communication? Would the new video phones change communication patterns? How does a generalizable office setting benefit from the video appliances? The results of this study help answer many of these questions.

To allow Managed Hosting clients access to the database, Blackboard provides Advanced System Reporting (ASR) which allows you to access a partial copy of your database. This session will demonstrate free tools for accessing ASR and go over what you’ll need to use it. Next, it will demonstrate how to use it to check student activities in a course, determine which users haven’t logged in, create a list of courses to delete and get a list of unused or unavailable courses. You’ll also learn where to go to find resources on building queries of your own.

The Wi-Fi Experience for Students, Faculty, Fans and Alumni
Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Fans have high expectations for Mobility when on campus.
Reliable Wi-Fi is critical to student retention and success. Visitors and Fans expect access to high performance Wi-Fi. Designing High Density Wireless for user demands in 2016 takes planning.

Wi-Fi in the numbers:
- Average College Student Brings 7 Internet-connected devices to campus - 2014 College Explorer Report
- 94% of Students use Wireless Devices for Course Work
- University of Montana surveyed students that were accepted but chose not to enroll. They found the top reason students cited for not attending was the lack of wireless access in the Residence Halls.
- Top Concerns for supporting Mobile Devices: 57% Security, 47% Bandwidth Limitation
- At College Games, Fans Often Leave at Halftime if they cannot connect to the internet or upload photos to social media
- Wi-Fi connectivity in Athletic Facilities and Public Venues makes more money for the University, through additional purchases, such as food, drink, merchandise or seat upgrades
- Tablets, Wearable Technology, and Data Analytics are changing coaching techniques and player performance

Richard Noonan, CDWG Wireless Solution Architect will discuss designing Wi-Fi in public venues, dorms, and stadiums to optimize the student, faculty, staff, and Alumni experience. Today, institutions must understand the applications and demands on the wireless network to create the ideal experience. Different types of construction and functions within a building impact the design of the Wi-Fi network. Richard will discuss designing high Density Wi-Fi for public venues for Higher Education such as University of Nebraska and University of Phoenix Stadium. Rich has over 7 years of experience designing wireless networks.

CDWG, a Gold Cisco Partner, holds Advanced Technology Specializations for Wireless LAN, and Advanced Technology Provider Certifications for Outdoor Wireless Mesh. CDWG is a Cisco Connected Stadium-Wi-Fi Partner. The Connected Stadium Wi-Fi badge designation recognizes CDWG's experience in designing high-density Wi-Fi solutions in challenging environments, as well as it's skill set and depth in wireless network. As of August 2015, CDWG was one of two partners to hold this designation.

Microsoft Remote Desktop Services as a virtual desktop replacement
For years we used a Citrix solution to provide students access to a virtual lab, it worked ok but had its own issues. For one, our students found it difficult to get connected. Second, it was expensive! Along comes Windows Server 2012 R2 and the new Remote Desktop Services (RDS) roles. This is not your father’s terminal server by any means. With RDS Bridgewater College was able to save a significant amount of money per year in licensing fees, provide a virtual lab environment that is much easier and faster for students and provide facilities for faculty and staff to work from home using by connecting to a secure managed environment.

With RDS we can provide just the applications that our students and employees need. With RDS RemoteApp users can use published applications just like the program was installed locally on their own devices. Should the users need a full desktop they can connect to a traditional terminal server environment or should they have specific needs they can connect to a private virtual desktop. These solutions since they are running in our datacenter provide users with local and domain resources from anywhere. All through one easy to use web portal.

IT Services and Faculty: Bridging the Divide
The relationship between faculty and IT staff is critical to the successful delivery of IT services and support on campus. A close relationship can better both the service catalog and the quality of support provided, while an indifferent or acrimonious one can severely impede these efforts. This session will discuss ways that IT departments can partner with faculty both inside and outside of the faculty governance structure to provide the best possible service. Some tools that will be discussed include a faculty oversight committee, surveys, faculty special interest groups/focus groups, and involvement in testing of new systems. We’ll discuss the benefits and challenges of the interaction from both the faculty and the IT perspectives, as well as some of the new IT options and support initiatives that we’ve implemented as a result of our increased communication with faculty.

Bridgewater College's Approach To Cloud Services
We have embraced virtualization for several years now, and in the past few years we worked towards highly available virtualization clusters that are still held on premise. Although this provides the necessary infrastructure to keep services operating in the case of a partial breakdown on our system, we wanted to be able to maintain services running in the case of a campus wide event. With cloud integration are able to not only keep backup copies of critical VM’s in the cloud but also offload and scale up resources when needed. We have also moved our data backup scheme from a traditional on premise implementation to a cloud based backup using Azure and MS Data Protection Manager at a much lower cost than our traditional backup software license. This presentation intends to outline the steps we took towards the current scenario, explain the rationale behind our decisions and thoughts on what could have been done differently or better.

Implementing FREE IT consultation services at the VCU helpIT Front Counter.
The Virginia Commonwealth University’s helpIT Center Walk-up Front Counter services a population of about 31,000 students and 2,000 full-time faculty. We all know how demanding working at a University’s IT front counter can be and as the technology has evolved over the last decade so have the demands of the Customer changed. VCU has initiated a Consultation Support Program (by appointment only) through which students, faculty, and staff can request a FREE one-on-one consultation with an IT support analyst to seek guidance in computer maintenance best practices, virus & malware remediation, software installation and troubleshooting, operating system download, and WiFi connectivity issues. During this presentation we will share with you our growing pains. Reveal the hurdles we had to overcome and the collaboration efforts between our group, VCU’s technology store (RAMTECH), and the student IT department (RESNET). We will have a short Q&A at the end of the presentation to learn from others who may have successfully executed a similar program on their campus or are in beta.

Next Generation Storage Networking: Object Storage, Software Defined, Hyper Converged, and More
This lecture is like a crash course in everything new and interesting in the data storage industry. Of course, storage has not fundamentally changed in the last 40 years, so it would be more accurate to say that the lecture frames the state of the data storage industry in the context of hardware advancements and industry trends, while attempting to separate the vendor marketing fluff from the simple realities of how storage devices work.

The content is vendor-neutral, in that the focus is on architectures, industry trends, and problem solving, not on specific products from specific vendors. Examples are drawn from commercial as well as open source solutions.

Managing Wi-Fi as a Service from the Cloud
As network infrastructure has continued to grow in complexity, the IT resources needed to manage the network have faced staffing and budget challenges. Many education industry IT managers have turned to the cloud to address these challenges. This provides the opportunity to budget Wi-Fi network infrastructure as a subscription service, rather than a capital purchase. Done right, cloud Wi-Fi management can provide a single point for provisioning, configuration, reporting, firmware management and troubleshooting.

Cloud-based Wi-Fi network infrastructure has the potential to provide network policy enforcement, simplified BYOD, application analytics, L7 control, and location services, just as on-premises control does.

Extreme Networks will present a new cloud-based Wi-Fi network infrastructure management solution.
